I silently mouth the words as I read them

Subvocalisation — the silent internal voicing of text during reading — is almost universal. Visible lip movement is a less common extension of this. Speed-reading courses try to eliminate it, but research shows that subvocalisation actually aids comprehension, particularly for complex material. Attempting to suppress it while maintaining full understanding is very difficult.
