Dogs are the only non-human animals that instinctively understand pointing
When a human points at something, a dog will look where they're pointing — not at the finger. This seems trivial until you test other intelligent animals. Chimpanzees, wolves, and most other animals look at the pointing finger itself and don't understand the social communication. Dogs developed this skill through tens of thousands of years of co-evolution with humans, and they display it from birth without training. Puppies raised in isolation understand pointing; wolf puppies raised with humans do not.
A simple gesture we take for granted — pointing at something — turns out to be a uniquely co-evolved communication channel between two species. Dogs don't just obey us; they read our intentions in ways that even our closest genetic relatives can't.
