Gentoo and Adélie penguins build their nests from pebbles, and a male will search for the smoothest, most impressive pebble he can find to present to a potential mate. If she accepts and places it in the nest, they become a pair. Pebbles are a serious currency in penguin colonies — they're stolen, traded, and guarded. Females choose males partly based on pebble quality, as it signals the male's ability to secure resources and build a good nest.
