English is only the third most spoken language in the world
By number of native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is first (around 900 million), Spanish is second (around 475 million), and English third (around 380 million). However, English has the most total speakers including second-language users (around 1.5 billion), making it the world's most widely used lingua franca. About 375 million people speak English as a second language. Approximately 7,000 languages are spoken on Earth today; about half are expected to be extinct by 2100. One language disappears roughly every two weeks.
Anglophones instinctively assume English is the dominant language of humanity. Discovering it ranks third by native speakers — behind both Mandarin and Spanish — shifts the centre of gravity of the world's linguistic story.
“English is only the 3rd most spoken language by native speakers. Mandarin is 1st (900M), Spanish 2nd (475M), then English (380M). About 7,000 languages exist — one dies every two weeks. 🌍 #OddlyHuman”
